WHY
REMOUNIZÉ

The genesis, meaning and ambitions of a singular cultural initiative.

Origin

For centuries, Black figures have appeared in Western artworks. Present, but rarely narrated. Servants in Dutch interiors, pages in royal portraits, silhouettes on the margins of grand historical compositions.

To de-monstrate is both to deconstruct and to show differently. It is the founding act of Remounizé.

— TraysKreyol, 2024

Approach

Remounizé chooses griot narration: an oral tradition of transmission where the griot is the guardian of collective memory. The film reconstructs trajectories from archival fragments, visual traces, historical hypotheses.

The aim is not to propose a definitive historical truth, but to open a space of looking — allowing each viewer to see differently images they thought they knew.

The word

Remounizé

Creole neologism

From Creole: to restore identity, to give back a name, a history, an existence to those who had been erased. The project's title is both its programme and its promise.
